چکیده

Sweet–Parker collisional magnetic reconnection at high Lundquist number is modified by secondary islands. Daughton et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 065004 2009 suggested the Sweet– Parker model governs the fragmented current sheet segments. If true, the reconnection rate would increase by the square root of the number of secondary islands. High Lundquist number resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations are presented which agree, in a time-averaged sense, with the predicted scaling. This result may have important implications for energy storage before a solar eruption and its subsequent release. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3274462

Comparison of secondary islands in collisional reconnection to Hall reconnection.

Large-scale resistive Hall-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the transition from Sweet-Parker (collisional) to Hall (collisionless) magnetic reconnection are presented; the first to separate secondary islands from collisionless effects. Three main results are described. There exists a regime with secondary islands but without collisionless effects, and the reconnection rate is faster than Swee...

Magnetic Reconnection for Coronal Conditions: Reconnection Rates, Secondary Islands and Onset

Magnetic reconnection may play an important role in heating the corona through a release of magnetic energy. An understanding of how reconnection proceeds can contribute to explaining the observed behavior. Here, recent theoretical work on magnetic reconnection for coronal conditions is reviewed. Topics include the rate that collisionless (Hall) reconnection proceeds, the conditions under which...

High Lundquist Number Resistive MHD Simulations of Magnetic Reconnection: Searching for Secondary Island Formation

Recently, secondary island formation due to the tearing instability of the Sweet-Parker current sheet was identified as a possible mechanism that can lead to fast reconnection (less sensitive dependence on Lundquist number S ) both in numerical simulations using Particle-in-Cell (PIC) method [Daughton et al. 2009], as well as using resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) [Lapenta 2008; Bhattacharj...

Singular structure of magnetic islands resulting from reconnection

Magnetic island equilibria resulting from reconnection in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations are explored in a two-dimensional slab geometry. Magnetic islands are evolved to finite amplitude with a nonzero resistivity. The resistivity and flows are then set to zero and the system is allowed to relax toward equilibrium. A y-type singular current layer in the equilibrium state is identified fo...
